Our evening
with Mary Anne Gale was a remarkable and inspiring event with the first
woman Plant Manager with P&G, in addition to breaking the glass ceiling or
the gender gap as the first female appointed to various senior executive
positions around the world. Mary Anne came to China in the mid 2000’s where
she stayed until her retirement in 2008. Even though she retired from P&G,
she embarked on a second career as a writer, career coach, and speaker,
helping women to develop their career potential.
Mary Anne
shared with us her personal experience in getting what she wanted out of her
career and running for the various offices during the 35 years when she was
with P&G. She disputed the various myths of a woman developing a career in
the corporate world.
Rather than
wait for the promotion or movement to come to us in our career that we think
we deserve, after delivering the results, putting in hard work and good
performance, which is just the basics for a successful career, we have to
run a campaign and actively cover the “politics” in running for the office
that we want.
Building
alliances, speaking out on what we want or the specific position we think we
are qualified for, running for that office, building a campaign to “get the
votes,” getting exposure to the “voters” or decision makers in the corporate
world for our career development.
The evening
was filled with wisdoms and life long experiences in what she has learned in
building her career, just like what she covered in her book “Running For
Office: Getting yourself elected to the career you really want”. |
